When installing the main input shaft to set the gap on the rear bushing behind the pinion are you suppose to use the nut and lock washer to set the gap then use the set screw to hold it. Or do you use the set screw to draw up the slack first? Manual says set screw is very prone to splitting if too much force is applied.

Set screw locks in position first. Then make sure tab is not broken on lock washer. It has
to enter keyway then nut can be locked by bending over tab. If not locked it will fly apart
like mine just did.

Been a while since I did one but it seems you use the set screw to get your gap and then the set screw is locked with a cotter through it? I don't think that gap is super critical. I think the mission is no slop but enough space for that heavy oil to get between the casing and the thrust washer - each side of the thrust washer.
