Modern view. Depends on rearend and tire size. Early U from in 1938-45 could do 22 mph.
Shift pattern is different.

I thought that those old ones would do more than 22 mph. Don't they have the same gearing as the UDLXs without the second shift disconnect deal? Anyway, I have a 41 UTU red nose with 36" tires that will scare the crap out of you in 5th at even an idle, and when you throttle it up some you start praying! LOL I've never had nerve enough to open her up to see what it will really do.

From what I can tell there's more out there than that. GB has forgot more about a Moline than I know but I've got a 52 utu and a 50 utu. Both have 13.6-38 on them the 50 runs 25 mph. The 52 only run 15. Both are stock and have properly adjusted gov. The UB I know is years lower than the utu and I wonder if the 52 has that gear set. Then the neighbor has a red nose that has 13.6-38 as well and it has the trans that GB is talking about. It'll run 36 mph. I don't think its running over stock rpm but never had a tach on it. I run 25 on mine all the time. The font end is badly loose but its safer than when I got it. The first thee years it didnt have brakes. By the way just because someone do something stupid don't mean you should. Lol.

Don't like to question but. UDLX could achieve 38 mph. Used same rear end but was direct drive with no ratio. To achieve this the governor was thrown wide open. Not sure if you could achieve with basic 5 th gear. Motor would have to be modded to get more rpm. Your brakes would never handle it . UDLX used outboard Bendix brakes.

The red nose I'm talking about very well might be turning a full 2000 rpm as iI said ive never had a tach on it. It'sthe only one iI've ever been around and youre right about the brakes and steering for that matter being inadequate. We tried it once followed it with a truck to clock it and that may be the only time it's ever been in fifth since they owned it. It definitely will not stop quickly. As far as my 50 utu it is stock. My grandpa farmed with a 51. I'm told it also ran 25. I barely remember it running. I have it but haven't got there yet. I got mine from a fence row and I had a tach on the crank when I rebuilt the gov. I do know mine has had the trans/rear axle replaced but it uses normal shift pattern. Can't read the s/n on it. The previous owner still has origional parts. I identified the year from s/n tag on it. The 52 utu I just got does not run as fast down the road as the 50. I haven't clocked it with a vehicle yet but feels like about 15. As I said you have been around these many years longer than me but this is the stuff I have and the facts about tthem as I know them.
