283 power Unit

Have a old 283 power unit that came off a American Hoist crane. It is a gas motor with an
oddball Zenith carb. Odd thing about unit is that it has 403 heads and exhaust/intake. Any
idea why this configuration was used? To me there would be no advantage to big heads on
283.

It has GE30E heads which were not common on a 283. Usually seen on a G motor not U. Not familiar with power unit configurations. Never seen such setup on any tractor from factory. To me it would be alot of volume for the displacement. Maybe higher rpm on a power unit. Carb is bigger to match intake but normally a TSx68 would be used. Odd carb as it has a accelerator plunger.

All of the early heads were GE-30 s as I understand it, it is the suffix letter that indicates the C. R. of the heads. My chart shows the GE-30E on a 286 or 425 is for high altitude tractor fuel and on a 403 or 605 high altitude gasoline. They also show to be the equivalent to the 10A4209.
