Oil filter woes

Hello again MM Folks! Well here the story, we just acquired a M602D and are in the learning curve of servicing it. We have the manuals on the way but I figured changing the filters would be straightforward. Fat chance. The oil filter internal can seems to be inflated so to speak. The end that slides over the oil pump fittings is not flat but rounded and the sides are slightly bulged. I found a pic online of one and it looks like it should be flat on the end. When installed it sits proud of the engine case by about 3/16" so does not look correct.

May be some parts/spring missing as well as when the can is installed and the filter over the oil pump fitting it will not reach the outside pump cover fitting. Any advice or pictures of system would be helpful until the manuals arrive. Just wanted to get it buttoned up but since Uncle Bumble has been here it don't look good:) Thanks again for your help.

PS: Looks like the previous mechanic was filter challenged as when I opened the fuel filter can there was nothing in there, wonder whats in the hyd filter can? Old newspaper maybe:)

602 didn't have a can filter. Had the glass bowl ones. ph 12045228456 Happen to have filter setup on bench. No springs.

602 used a can on primary. 10P2170. M5 is what I am working on has 3 filters. Some others had the 2 glass ones.

Well I am definitely missing something! I can see in your picture that your filter when placed in the can is about 1/8 from the top and mine is 1/2" which is allowing it to fall off the cover peg when installed. Could you do me another favor and tell me the OL length of your oil filter (from spigot to spigot) please? Maybe wrong filter here.

Cheers from Arizona!

Regards,
Gary

Not near filter now but it is slightly over 6 inches. Very common filter used all the 336 or 504 diesels.

Yes mine is 6-1/4 so I am sure its correct. Very strange here this problem. Will solve tho, thanks for your help.

Not 6 1/4 unless you are measuring centers. Maybe a 32nd on outer.Has cannister been damaged. It can happen if someone tried to remove oilpan without removing canister. Does canister sit flush into crankcase housing? Is center of filter correct diameter. What is filter number?
