Any quick way to get the cast iron pistons out of a U, with out cracking the jugs? The machine shop says not to press them out!!!

I used a dead blow and oil. Been told you can fill cyl with grease bolt head on and make a reducer to put a zirc in spark plug hole and give a few pumps. Sounds solid but I haven't tried it yet.

I just press the pistons out. I clean and grease bottom of cylinders. They always come out. Only broke one. If they are really stuck the odds block/pistons done anyways. I have enough extra parts I never worry about it.

Stuck?

I've done the grease zerk thing, like was mentioned, I have also made a wooden plug the just fit the cylinder, put a jack on it and wrapped a chain around the crankcase and pressed them out that way.

P.S. If you try the grease zerk idea, put as much grease in the cylinder as you can before you put the head on and check the valves and seats, if they don't seal that is where all your grease is going to go. It took about 9 pounds of grease to do a ZT one time.

If your cylinder is tapered from wear & stuck piston is at the top, there is a chance of cracking the cylinder at the bottom. The rings will be stuck because they have expanded out & froze. If you try to press them out at the bottom (I.d. smaller at bottom than top), it could split the bottom of the cylinder. I know because I had that happen one time. Cut the ridge at the top of the cylinder if possible & press the piston out the top. Just my two cents.

My son got them U pistons unstuck, he used 50% ATF and 50% Acetone,24hours later he hit them with a hammer and couldn't believe it he moved the piston about a 1/8 inch. So hes happy.
