Question for zau motor

Back in May I pulled an old z out of a collapsed she'd. The engine was free so I
thought I was on my way to get it running. While testing the starter the motor
locked up tight. I soaked the cylinders with penetration oil, diesel, and at with no
luck. I have been slowly working on taking it apart. Tonight I looked in the clutch
inspection plate. Took a bar and easily turned the engine backwards. I have tried
every thing else that I could think of with no luck. Wish I had tried this a long
time ago. My question, the engine binds when the #2 and #3 pistons are top dead
center. I can't turn the engine forward but I can turn it backwards. It binds when
the Pistons are in the same position but will turn. Turning forward it is like
something is obstructing. The valves are free and I don't feel a Ridge in the
cylinders. Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks Bruce

I say that then I re read and you say you don't feel a ring ridge. No more posts before coffee. Can the rockers stick?

I agree, I've had mice crawl into the exhaust and find an open valve and put as much as half a cup of corn or soybeans in a cylinder in a matter of weeks. Had one I had overhauled and was waiting for parts and forgot to cover the exhaust, would almost turn a complete turn either way but not quite go to top dead center. The same thing can happen if the air cleaner isn't hooked up and they enter that way. I have even had them go into the water inlets and build nests in there and then crap ends up plugging the radiator when you get things running. A real pain. Pull the head and it will probably be obvious. Good luck.

You are all correct the manifold was packed full of seeds and pecan hulls. When I took the head off there was just dust and a little bit of trash in the cylinders.

Thinking about it last night, I think the crank is hitting something when the #2 and #3 pistons are at the top of their stroke. I am wondering if a skirt of one of the pistons broke off and is in the way. I didn't think to look when I was working on it last night.

Once upon a time, I had an engine that spun a rod bearing half from the cap end around to the top side, causing a slightly longer stroke. Might want to give it a look. Hope that's not it.

Had couple motors where carbon came loose from setting and gets pinched between piston an top of cylinder
