MMoline Z za, Clutch Disc...?

Was working on Clutch on the Za. Notice the disc is a "Pie" type 2 piece disc plate? Can you still get these today. Ive heard you can remove them with out splitting the tractor in half? For replacement. Ive noticed the only ones I have found are one piece type discs. Is this the reason for the 2 piece disc?

wes verbal,
There are several reasons for the "pie slice" type friction plates. On some applications you can insert the new plate through the inspection hole. Most of the sectional plates are thirds plates. If you are slicing plates from flat stock, there is less waste. This is what I normally see. All of the half plates I have come across are for costdown or shipping ease. Half plates are a bear to get through the inspection plate.

A small advantage to third slice plates is they tend to tighten up the tooth to driver ring spacing when the RPMs go up. Centrifugal force pushes the sections out, but these plates can shift when the load gets up to the clutch limits.

When I have Twin Disc plates made; the factory generally asks me if I want to make sectional plates. My response has always been no. My attitude has always been that sectional plates are not worth it. The price difference is just pennies. I can ship a full round Z #JT9019 plate in a USPS regional rate 'A' box for a super cheap rate anyway. And finally; the sixty three tooth solid plates tend to be super quiet and there is no chance that some puller is going to twist the friction plate.

I refuse to accept cut plates and always order the HF35 'Buster Brown' molded plates. For some reason; it is difficult to get them to make sectional plates from this material. I am lazy and do not want to do anything twice. Do it once. Do it right. Let the grand-kids worry about fixing the clutch next time, when we are out of the picture. I always split the tractor and make sure that everything is kosher in there. I check for cracks and spray moly plate on the adjustment screws and fingers. I stick in new high temperature clutch springs too.

If you really want slice clutch plates; I know several dealers that probably would have some NOS ones laying around. If you have the tractor split, do you need sectional discs?

Take care.
Charlie
