Rear Gear lube for Moline

Whats good brand gear oil to run in the rear tranny of the Z models ? Is 80-90 or straight 140 ok? Ive got 3 jugs of straight 140 sta-lube brand gear oil. If its ok to use i might just buy 5 more gallons of it. Or is there better beand out there?

The book calls for 140 in summer and 90 in winter. It takes 7 gallons.

Personally, I use an 85W-140 year around. That said, if you will only be running it in the summer, the 140 weight should be fine.

Thank for replt Ronnie. Yeah when cold weather hit i leave it in garage most time. So id say ill just stick with the 140 sta-lube stuff. What brand 85-140 do you buy?

As long as you can find a compatible oil, I dont think it would hurt to add 85w-140 to fill out the rest of what you need if you find something cheaper. I believe the book says you can thin out the oil with kerosene for winter and then change in the spring. That gets expensive and back then they didnt have multi-grade oils. As long as the oil you use is safe for the brass parts and seals used most any oils will work in the older equipment. If you dont use it in the winter the thicker oil might be better as it wont seep out as fast if you have any leaks. If I remember correctly, my dad said some of the old 140w was black in color.

Yep Alan you are correct sir. Ive got 3 jugs each 1 gallon each of the 140 sta-lube stuff its very good oil i think ill buy me another 5 gallong and call it good.

I am not the one with experience here but the local distributor here in Central California used to carry 90 and 140 but now only carries 85/140. It is Exxon Super Flo. They say that is the replacement for needing to switch oil. My Operator's Manual for my ZTN says to use 140 above freezing and 90 below freezing. It rarely freezes here but when it does, it will only be a few degrees under. My Z is retired and fully restored. Among the 8 or so events I have done with it the last couple years, it does a couple tractor rides and a plow day and I am pleased with the Exxon oil performance.

We are ready for our Memorial Day Tractor Drive in this picture. You may notice the front is a universal front it has had since the first owner had the N front changed to the U front. If I can find a N front here in California somewhere, I would trade it out.

Sorry about that.
