log splitter on utu

Can I build a log splitter use the tractors hydraulic system and valve with a regular cylinder? Seems like it would work as you don't need a hold position and it's a two way system. Any thoughts?

Really depends on what type of pump you have. I use a log splitter with a UB, plenty of power to split everything except some hard knots. I put a control valve on it too so I could use it with other cylinders. I think most UTUs had a weaker pump? The UB has a "webster"? if my mind serves me right.

F=P X A.......Force = Pressure X Area

Many Variables....Type of wood I split "DRY Beatle Kill PINE" has many Knots. Ram is 5" Diam. hydraulic max out put is 1,500 psi.

Consider attaching a Pressure gauge to the Hydraulic pump and verifying the pumps out put PSI.

I have 1000psi at the rear. Just to verify what I think I'm being told here is I can do it (and I have the stuff laying around) but it will not the greatest thing in the world. My biggest concern is the cylinder I have is off an old case backhoe. I know it will only have pressure when I'm holding the leaver but will it hurt the tractor and is there anything I'm not thinking about that would be a safety concern? I don't think it would need a hold position on a splitter but the only splitter I have ever used is an axe. Got to be better than that I would think.....
