504 engine stand

I have been looking at different engine stands. The next engine I will be overhauling is a 504 LP. Will a 2000 lb engine stand be heavy enough? Thanks Jeff

Dieselbear, do you have a stand you use? If so could you put a picture on here? I've been to your place a couple of times but never paid attention. Thanks, John Grandfield

John I start on a steel welding table, put the crank, cam , front cover/crank pully in and then put the block in the tractor, the rest of the assembly is done while the block is setting in the tractor

I started off with a 2000 lb. foldable engine stand. I would guess the stand might hold 2000 lb. if it were mounted right at the faceplate with no overhang. However, that, of course, is an impracticality in the real world.

I modified the stand so that it would hold a 3000 ft-lb moment load. That is 1500 lb. load with center of gravity at 2 ft. from the faceplate. First I moved the vertical support to the rear about 7" so that an engine would be centered better between the front and rear wheels. I calculated that a 3" diameter steel shaft with 1/2" wall thickness would be adequate for the pivot shaft. I just went with a 3" solid diameter shaft since the cost was only a few bucks more. I had a 12" diameter faceplate laser cut out of 1" thick steel. This was welded to the pivot shaft. I also had a number of 4" and 6" long mount arms cut out of 1" thick steel. In addition I mounted a 60:1 gearbox on the end of the pivot shaft for rolling over a mounted engine. I found out the hard way that rolling an engine in an engine stand can be dangerous without some sort of gear reduction.

Not knowing the weight and center of gravity of a 504 engine, I can't say whether this approach would work for it but it may be food for thought.

The pix below show what I started with (which had already been somewhat modified) and how it ended up.

I'll try to post a pic of the one a buddy built for me. It can accommodate small or large belle engines and can support a 585 or HD-800 easily. It cranks over for easy crank and piston installation as well. I love it.
