Good pulling tractor candidate

My uncle has a 5 Star set up for pulling. I did the engine on it. It has been a fun tractor. I have been thinking about starting to round up pieces to build one for myself. In our area, the classes are called hobby stock. Rules are 10% over RPM, stock appearing blocks heads, carbs etc. No aluminum chassis components or cut tires. The 5 Star is 454 CI, short blocks and square port heads. It holds its own quite well. I've been thinking a disc brake G would be a very good candidate for the ruling. With the tall blocks being allowed on it, it opens up a lot more engine potential. Any one else have any better ideas?

It all depends on how light you want to go. We used to pull against a guy that had a HD800 in his G6, he could get down to 5500, but it wouldn't
hook to the track, we could compete with him with a basically stock 403 in a U, course more weight, the less that was true. With no aluminum
allowed on a G, I think you'll be in the heavier classes. Around here, the heavier the class, the more cubes and the later the night. I hope this
helps some. DP

Depending on what you're allowed to
take off or change: it will be
difficult to get a late GTB below
6000#. I had one that still had all
original components ( fenders,
platform, frame, etc ). Pto and belt
pulley removed: had to run 15.5x38
tires on steel wheels to do 5500#.
Barely made class. Built a set of
wheel centers that would bolt to
original MM 8 lug axle hubs.

Our rules allow 9 bolt wheels. I'm thinking with that in mind, 5500 should be doable. I would switch to late R clam shell fender?s probably. There are a few U's running around that usually pull 5500 and up.

If you try: a U will make 5000#. With
the big pistons and good heads: will
develop near the hp of the G. FYI: a
standard is lighter than the trike. I
had a 51 UTS that I pulled in 4500# .
Had to pull the "open" class since it
was light on the front but it is
possible (16.9x34 tires ). You no
doubt can't strip one that much and be
inside the rules, but, a U opens up
more classes.
