Have a new to me U302 and am in the process of going through everything on it. I have a few questions I'd like some advice on, feel free to comment on anything, I appreciate it!

1. Best way to clean up some sludge in the engine - Diesel or kerosene and drain oil?

2. Clutch adjustment - Where is the right spot to measure the travel of the clutch pedal?

3. Carb adjustments - the process and adjustments for a marvel schebler carb? Looks like the manual i got might no be for same one and want to be sure.

4. Blow by? Puffs a bit when oil fill cap is off and a little from the breather which i didn't see when i was looking at it. I haven't had an opportunity to do compression tests yet, but plugs look good and it doesn't smoke. Just curious on that

Thanks for any help!

I know there is a wealth of knowledge and experience in these forums, no one has any comments on any of these topics at all?

If it not broken don't mess with it. I would change the oil & filter and an little tune up
but cleaning & adjusting may cause more problems then you want. From what you say it is
performing about as would be expected. Cleddy

Im not sure what would be the best to clean the engine. I think there are some
additives you can add to clean out an engine and then drain the oil. How bad is
it? The clutch adjustment I usually take a tape measure and either hold it
steady on the platform or clamp a strap iron or something to the platform and
then with the tape up towards the part of the pedal that you put your foot on,
move the clutch pedal forward and measure. ( depends on the model and pedal type
where to hold the tape ). Carb adjustments are generally two rounds out to start
and then adjust from there. I will have to see if I can find any other info on
that. The puffs of smoke might be from the rings not seating if it has been
sitting for a while. If that is the case it might get better as you run it more.

Get yourself a good set of manuals and they should help with the little stuff like valve tappet setting, clutch and TA adjustment.

To get the sludge out of my UB Special, I set up the parts washer with a long vinyl tube off the nozzle. I removed the side cover plate off the crankcase so I could see where the sludge was. With the oil drain plug removed and a bucket placed beneath, I just let the parts washer pump a stream of fluid until the parts washer would run out of fluid. Then take the bucket and empty it back into the PW. By moving the vinyl tube to different locations maybe a dozen times, I had the crankcase pretty clean. There was so much junk in there that I would not to use some solvent with the engine running. That would likely put a lot of grit through the bearings, and still not get it cleaned out. The PW trick worked pretty well.
