Minneapolis mm Ztn.

Hello, i have purchased a Minneapolis moline
ztn model was wondering about the engine
manifold and intake on these models.ive
noticed that the tappets and guide are
horizontal in this engine... my question is
does the manifold and intake drop from the
top of the engine straight to the Pistons
and guides or does it have a separate area
from where it channels up, havent had a
tractor with this kinda manifold coming in
at the top of the engine area?does anyone
have a cut out view of this ?
 
These are sidevalve flathead engines. The valves and ports are above the cylinder and the cylinder is partially blocked from the top. The pistons come out the bottom. The intake airflow drops down through the manifold vertically, then turns horizontally through the ports and valves, then vertical again to the cylinder and piston. The exhaust is just the revers of course.

The valvetrain is very simple. The rocker arms run directly on the cam lobes and directly operate the valves. No lifters.

It's a simple and efficient design. The only drawback I have found is that it takes specialized equipment to bore the blind cylinders if they ever need bored out.
 
Reason ask is i cut the old muffler down to mount a new one to tractor and had some piece of metal fall into manifold area i took a shop vac to it along with magnet stick.. was worried they would find there way down manifold to engine 😯
 
If you lost something in the manifold, I would suggest taking the manifold off and trying to find it. hopefully its still in the exhaust port in the head and hasn't fallen past the exhaust valve into the cylinder. Most likely its in #2 or #3 exhaust port or in #2 or #3 cylinder. That's where the water goes when it rains in.

Well its really nothing major i dont think... i cut the old muffler off and with saw zaw to put on a striaght pipe and before doing so i pushed a rag down into manifold a ways to keep out the small debris.... and what stuff that fell in i used a shop vac and magnet to remove... i was just hoping most of the small little piece "would if they fell in" just blow out as i drove the tractor. I did take each plug out and swab inside area just to.make sure.

When I brought my '48 ZTN home, it had a straight pipe on it. It was deafening. My neighbors from 1/2 mile away commented on it. Driving the beast around for 30 minutes would give you a headache. I've got a dozen old tractors in the collection, many with straight pipe exhausts. A ZTN is not one of them.
Put a factory style muffler on it. It's my favorite sounding tractor in the collection. Do yourself a favor and get a muffler.

Suggest you adjust the valves when you have time. I have a ZTN and RTN. Both had tight valves when purchased. It's easy to do and just might make it run better.
 
Just to add, if it was the original dual fuel exhaust manifold I dont believe that would go straight down into the cylinders because they have a heat riser valve on them.
 
Hummmm i see now yeah... a shut off valve.... in the manifold. ....my is a 1948 lioks be all original so not really sure if has one not??
 
If there is a piece that has two bolts (one to the front-radiator side and one to the back-fuel tank side) and has hot / cold on it (if I remember correctly), that is the heat riser valve. If it is a later manifold like what was used on a G4 MM combine it is all one piece.
