The seal around the PTO shaft on my U is leaking. I am told there is a rope seal that needs replacing. Is this something that an auto parts store will have? Will any type of rope work? Where can I find this? Thanks

It takes 1/4 in, valve stem packing. About 14-16 inches. You should be able to git it at a hardware or order it from agco.

If you can't find the correct 1/4" packing, get whatever graphite (grey) packing string your hardware store stocks for faucets. Loosen the setscrew and remove the packing nut and put a few turns of the string around the shaft and push it inside beside whatever of the old packing is left in there.

DO NOT remove whatever of the original packing is left in there. Just add some to put more pressure on it. Then replace your packing nut. Adjust it tight enough you can tell there is some drag. If it still seeps, tighten the nut some more.

You may also be able to use the white teflon packing, but I never tried it.

I bought some packing from McMaster Carr for my UB a few years back. I don't recall the specifics right now, but it seems like I cut it in short lengths and made rings and stacked several of them on top of each other.

Several years ago, before the internet lol, I didnt know what to use or where to find any packing so I used some rope seals from a rear main on a Ford engine. Worked well.

I have the right stuff in the right length. 815.456.2114. If there is still threads showing between the Hex on the nut and the housing, Loosen the set screw and turn the nut to force the packing tighter on the shaft. That may be all you need to do. It was designed to keep adjusting the nut as it wore to keep it from leaking. But I'll bet 80% are still set where they were from the factory.
