I'm about to put new seals on the steering piston on my 302. What do you do to the cork seals so they will stretch over the piston without tearing in two?

I've soaked them in hydraulic oil but that seems to have little effect. Mostly I just hold my breath and am amazed that they don't break - and they never have. Once I somehow got lucky and received a different type of backup ring from Welter's. They were a plastic spiral affair that was far less nerve racking to install.

I no longer use the old leather (cork?) backers ans rings. Soaking them in Dextron is iffy at best.
The new Buna-N parts are far better, cheaper, and last a lot longer without drying out. In my own applications, I use, and stock, the teflon seals and rings. They are a fix it once and forget it proposition. Drop me a line.
