Gvi/G705 transmission

I'm changing some gears in my G705, and I have a question- why is there a retainer (two bolts and a plate) on the rear of the upper countershaft? The shaft and bearings are contained by the trans case and the front bearing cover, and there's no way they can move. I was doing differential work on a different tractor a few years ago, and I found that plate and bolts in the bottom of the diff case. Didn't hurt a thing. Since the bolts are such a pain to get to with the diff in place, I might just leave them out.
