MM-602 Starting

Hello!

Has anyone come up with an easier way to start this tractor, instead of the "kick the hell-out-of-the knob/lever" starter shaft? I've taken the engaging solenoid off, cleaned/buffed the contacts, but that didn't help much. Sometimes I'm lucky and it fires after one or two punches, other times; my foot/toes ache. Either this is the stupidest design in the world, or mine has something wrong.

Thanks.

I have a MM 602 LP. It has key switch with a push button starter (factory) . It is a 1963 model. Is yours a latter model. Mind is quite simple,
turn the key, push the button.

Yeah, not the most fun, especially if its a diesel and doesn't want to catch right away. What I usually do on mine is make darn good and sure its in neutral, then start it from the ground. I push on the lever that presses the contact button on the starter, get pretty decent leverage that way. Also puts me close enough to the intake to use the ether can with my other hand, lol!

Didn't the old GVI have that same setup. I know our M5 diesel does. We had a 61 GVI and I'm sure you had to kick start that too. Seems like they took a step backwards with that setup since even the old 38s had the button starter. A lot of the old trucks used that setup too through the 40s and early 50s.

My 1959 GVI MM has the foot start and I start it on the ground..We had
a 58 Chevy 2 ton truck with foot start..

I usually start my 5 Star diesel from ground. Easier than pushing in rod. Make shure it is in neutral before trying to start.

Mine is about a 1961. I'm going to try the "ground start" method. Even though I'm VERY careful about being in neutral, those rear tires are VERY big!!! :-(

Thanks all!
