The book calls for a 1108162, the rebuilt that it on there is a 11M3078 the best I can see. The 11M3078 has a 12 tooth drive, the original starter that I found at the previous owner's farm has a 10 tooth drive but the tag is gone from the starter. The original seems to work better but sounds like the tooth count maybe still off. The rebuilt that was on the tractor when I bought it was binding up at times. Is it supposed to have the 10 or maybe an 11? The partsbook doesn't break the starter down. Thanks chris

FWIW, Wilson Auto Electric, who's interchanges are usually reliable, lists their #91-01-3974 starter, which has a 12-tooth drive.

A Wilson is what the rebuilt is and has the 12 tooth. 20 years ago Wilson rebuilds were junk at least around here, you mention Wilson and never heard anything good. chris

Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck with Wilson (now part of BBB) rebuilts.

I've had just the opposite experience.

NOT sure if they've maintained the same (Canadian) quality after the buyout, time will tell.

What brand of rebuilts have you had the best luck with?

I am pretty sure your starter needs 12 teeth on the bendix gear. That is what is on my Jetstar.

That 10 tooth starter bendix would work in an R or a Z, provided it has same rotation.

For what its worth, I have had starter trouble on my Jetstar. (Well, back when I ran it regularly. Its been sitting for a while.) More than one starter will fit, The replacement from a salvage yard fit fine, but it has a different number on the tag.
They do like BIG battery cables, a good charged battery and clean connections everywhere.
More finecky than a Z or ZB. At least one time trying to crank on a weak battery caused it to melt the solder connection between the hot post and the field windings.

Thanks, tried the 12 tooth the other day, it does sound better than the 10 tooth, maybe somebody installed the wrong drive on the original starter.chris
