Acquired a U lp, the shift lever is REAL SLOPPY. What do I need to do to tighten up/fix? Slot in pivot ball is 1/2" wide, can't see it wearing that much over the years but don't know.Does top cover need to come off to remove lever assy? thanks, john

I bought a ZAS out of Florida that was worn that badly. But everything else about it was worn out too. . . . And it had some non-factory bends added to it at some point.

Anyway, I think you have to remove the cover to get the shift lever out of the early Us. There should be a spring underneath and I think it snaps into a groove in the cover to push the shiftlever up. If the later ones are made like a UB or ZB, there will be a cast ring that retains the shift lever with 4 bolts in it.

If your shifter is worn that badly, the pin that locates it is probably worn out too. I got one from the Deere dealer, it wasn't an exact replacment, but it worked.
I had a welding shop weld mine up, and then they ground a new slot with their cutoff wheel.
