U302 engine in a ZA

I know it is possible to do, but don't know the particulars on putting a 220A-4 engine from a U302 into a ZA or a ZB. What flywheel, clutch, and starter combinations are needed.

I would probably do this with a ZB, but also have a ZA if it would be easier.

I believe the Mohr family installed a 4 Star motor in a ZB years ago. I would rather keep a U302 running than a ZA though. You can find ZAs yet, U302s not so much.

Yeah, I'm still debating with myself over what to do with the U302 that followed me home. It has been worked hard and abused. The whole front axle has been broken and welded and some kind of truck spindles and 20 inch split-rim truck wheels put on it. The spindles were welded to the steering components. They aren't coming off without a cutting torch. It really needs a whole different front axle. The power steering doesn't work. I basically bought it for the loader that is on it, and had to take the non-running tractor to get it.

The motor was stuck, but I have it free now. Water got into two cylinders from an uncovered exhaust. Those two cylinders have low compression, the other two have very good compression. It needs overhauled.

I have a nice and straight ZB that also has a stuck motor. So, since I have two non-running tractors, one straight and one really rough, I am thinking about rebuilding the 220A-4 and putting it into the ZB, or a ZA that I have. I can pull that in our local brush pulls without complaint because its just about fun with those guys. Restrictions are minimal. Just tire size for weight and drawbar rules.

This motor is in an LP U302 and the two good cylinders are showing 230 to 240 PSI cranking pressure. Even the two bad ones are showing nearly 180. It has high compression heads. I'm getting a huge amount of blowby through the valve cover breather though, during cranking. I have not been able to get it started yet. Probably shouldn't anyway. Probably broken rings. The motor is a good candidate for rebuilding.

I have a ZA I put A 445 engine in not so hard used the 445 ring gear on the za ring gear machined front of teech of about haft slip 445 ring gear over this was done when we had the old one man machine shops

If it was me and just my opinion mind you, if you are going to go to the work to rebuild the 302 motor I would do it to put back in the 302. The pistons in those are the only ones that used that particular size. If you are looking for an engine like that to put in a ZA or ZB I would look for a Jet Star 4 Star 445 engine. They might be a little more plentiful and a little cheaper for finding parts.

O.K. guys, How did you get the left side radiator outlet on the ZA/ZB and the right side water pump inlet on the engine connected?

And did you have to cut the hood for the crankcase breather/oil cap?

It is in SW Missouri. It's a 1964 model. It has a White Motors 1610 loader on it. I'm in over $1100 at this point, and don't have it running yet. The loader is usable.

Make an offer. I have too many projects, and not enough roof space. It's outside for the winter.

Thanks for the advice everybody. After playing with this 302 for awhile, and sleeping on the idea few times, I think I will just keep the U302 intact.

I still want to build a ZA puller though. I'm looking for somebody in my area who can bore the blind cylinders.
