U Shifter problems

I have a U that will go into the gears on each side of the shift pattern but will not go into the middle of the pattern without a lot of trial and error...I think part of the reason is the shifter rotates when I try them...was told that there are balls on the shifter that are worn...is this a major fix or a fairly easy fix? Could it be something entirely different than either of these? Thanks for looking.

I got the same problem on mine. Took it all apart, cleaned it all up greased the shafts, the balls and springs which didn't really help at all. So I
guess we both are looking for some help. Thanks

If your lever is sloppy like you say it is, the bottom end of the lever is probably missing the center fork altogether and not moving it. Try using two hands and hold it as close to center position as possible and see if you can manure forward or rearward. A sloppy lever is aggravating regardless. On all U s up to UB and UTS prior to 1953 you have to remove the cover to repair. After 1953 the shifting tower is bolted to the cover and it is a much easier fix.The lever can be removed from the bottom side and the slot in the ball part of the lever has to be built up with weld and machined to fit the new pin which you have to install in the cover.

Sorry about that. The editing function is not working on this site. Manure is not the word my fingers were supposed to type. MOVE the lever forward and rearward.

There is at least 3 different U shifting setups. Shifter should not rotate. If it does
there is something wrong causing it to miss gears. I think there is a pin that goes through
ball on shifter lever holding it true. Have had several and just replace whole shifter.

I had the same problem on my UB. I heated and straightened the lever so that it was a straight up-down shift into 1st and 4th. It was much friendlier shifting thereafter. I do not know if that is possible with a U and not conflict with steering column.
