Found a U not running, got it running, but now my PTO will not engage. I was able to shred with it the other day for about 1/2 hour. Now I cannot move the lever either way, currently PTO is not turning. I am assuming I will have to unbolt the PTO unit from the tractor and see what I can see. I also hear occasionally, what sounds like metal hitting inside the rear end of the tractor when I am driving it, especially on un-level ground. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like time for 'exploratory surgery'. Since you hear metal hitting, I wouldn't suggest driving it much until its fixed.

If I were you, I would Head the front end of the " U " downhill to get the grease away from the PTO unit., then take off the PTO unit. Look in or feel around in the grease and you mite find an inner PTO shaft laying on the bottom of the diff.
I had a noise in one of my "U" s that I had just bought. I did what I just described and found the inner shaft rolling around . Took it out and all was OK then. Someone had left it in when the PTO unit was removed. I had an extra shaft then! Hope this helps.Not sure if that mite hinder the shifting. clint
