I have a stupid question to ask, so here goes, how hard should it be to engage the PTO on a U? I can engage it if I get off the tractor, sometimes I have to push or pull very hard. I usually engage the PTO before I get on the tractor, then I start shredding, but If I need to dis-engage, I have to stop and get off. Am I missing something or is this as good as it gets. Thanks

All of mine shift in and out fairly easy, could be built up dirt and dry grease around the shift rod, try spraying/soaking it with your favorite penetrating oil and work it in and out, might help it,otherwise it might be something dry on the inside shifter splines if the rear end has been low on oil or sat awhile ,Jim

my U shifts easily while sitting in the seat. You may need to remove the PTO unit from the tractor and clean the shifting mechanism.

Could you show a picture of what you are trying to shift. Your tractor might be missing the shift lever assy.

mmdel has my thoughts. If you do have the shift lever: then it is either "gummed " up or has something bent or warped.

I agree, a picture would be helpful to make sure you have all the parts. On my ZA if there is any considerable load on the pto, I have to stop to shift it out of gear or really work at it to disengage it. There is no clutch on them, it is direct linkage for power so you are disengaging all of that.

Here are a couple pictures of my UTS showing the lever assembly if that helps.

Well it appears that my tractor is missing some parts. I have not had time to post pictures, but all I have is a L shape rod above the PTO shaft. Based on the pictures I should have another handle assembly to engage. Pictures are a big help, Thanks very much.

I will have to check the parts books but I think the U and Gs should be the same parts. GBs I think might be a little different.

It looks like the U and early GTBs were the same. Later GTBs were set up like the GB I believe.
