U coming home

Finally found my Dads U that was sold in the estate sale 9 years ago. Those 9 years was the only time the tractor was off the farm. My question is what exactly is it. It is the first tractor that I remember driving. I was told it was bought new in 55 or 56. As luck would have it the serial plate is missing. The engine plate reads: 283A-4 and engine serial is 01920734. I have the original manual that says for "U" standard, Universal or Cane. 334001 and after. The new temp owner did put some different tin on.

Engine serial number 01920734 is from 1952

Unless front end has been changed it is a model UTU or U tractor with Universal (2 wheel narrow spaced) front end.

I know it is a good feeling to bring back a member of the family.

Thanks for the info. Located near Letcher. Also sold mounted cultivator, break away plow and a 5-star that I'm still looking for. Kick myself everyday that i didn't keep more of that equip but at the time I didn't have the interest.(Virgil-I have the 302 wired and running good. Now to get the lights and dash lights working. Winter project)

Well, at least you got one tractor back! Nothing like having the old family iron stay in the family - especially after it got away for a bit!

Hope you find the rest of it!

Is it common for the serial number plate to come off? Will never know the info that goes with a serial number that would be associated with this tractor because I have no record of such number. Thats all. Much like a persons birth certificate. Is there another way to verify tractor history?
