Minneapolis Moline U 1950

I am guessing you want to separate the
engine from transmission bell. I
block up and get the rear half so it
won't move: then swing front half
with a chain hoist. Be sure clutch is
engaged so the friction discs don't
fall out. Lining those back up with
the flywheel can be a bear. Some sort
of a spreader bar helps prevent front
from trying to pivot on steering.

I don't have a chain hoist that will handle the front half of a U. I block up under the oil sump, back this up with a ratchet hoist to the rafters, and then put a floor jack under the bell and roll the rear back from it. If its a narrow front, an extra chain from both sides of the radiator to the rafters is good insurance too. If its a wide front, some wooden wedges driven in the axle pivot to make sure it doesn't want to lay over on the axle are a good idea.

Ive split a ZB before. I blocked up the front under the engine, and I straddled the
front with a cherry picker and chained it to the manifold, just for added protection.
For the rear I had a couple of angle irons bolted to the sides with wheels on the
bottom so I could roll it backwards. I agree if it is a wide front block it good so it
doesnt tip to the side, that can happen easily. Usually the front half of a tractor is
more prone to tipping when moved so Ive always rolled the rear away from the front.
That is the way we did it in Vo-Tech as well. I have an M5 I need to put a clutch in so
Im going to make some splitting stands for that.

I move the front half: others the
back. Principle is the same: just
depends on what tools and facilities
you are working in. BE CAREFUL! !!
