Advice on za engine

Greetings,

I have a ZA in need of some engine work. The flywheel starter ring needs to be flipped/replaced as this will require splitting the tractor I did a compression test all cylinders between 110 and 125 psi. Unclear if issue is with valves (no valve suck sound) or Pistons/rings. When running has good power. Just beginning to blow blue smoke, not all the time usually when the engine lugs down. Only #4 spark plug was oily rest dry..

Not setting out for heavy use. Moving wagons/choring/feeding -easy to get on and off of big enough to do something with. I installed Pertronix ignition and it starts just like a new one.

My guess is that while split should look at rings and valves and make decisions from there. Might be an opportunity to put in hard valves for unleaded fuel. Usually I go through Welters for parts.

Any advice is welcome

You could take the side covers off and check the valve wear in the guides. You might be getting some oil consumption there.

I am not for sure. Would have to do some checking. But I think ZA s had Satellite seats and valves. The ZA s had a 10A part number and the Z s were an RE number. At that time MM was starting to build a lot of LP tractors and on the larger tractors they went from GE numbers to a 10A number. The 10A s all had hard seats and valves. When you tear an old one apart the exhaust valves and seats will never be rusty.
