Ok I need to adjust the clutch on my U. I understand the process generally but have never done it before. I'm asking the clutch has to be released and when I tried to adjust if I was turning the engine over.am I doing this right and the ring is just stuck or am I missing something? I did have the pin pulled out.

Im thinking it is probably like the ZAs, if so, I always thought the manual said to put it in gear (I usually used 5th) then pull the pin out and turn upward (turning the bottom of the assembly towards you). Usually 1 position was enough. Sometimes another one was needed. I usually put my left hand on the bottom of the assembly, pull the pin out with my other hand and then just pull it towards me a little until the pin locked.

Yes, the ring can stick. Two pieces threaded together with the spring pin to keep them from moving. If it is stuck, you can either beat on it with a bar through the hand hole, or else you can split the tractor, free up the ring and then put it back together.

Probably if you opt to beat on it, you will end up doing both. I did.

Is this what you need to do to keep it from jerking so bad? The clutch on my UTS is really jumpy. It's almost impossible to ease into it. I probably should have looked into this before I painted it!
Otherwise, for as little as the tractor gets used, I may just continue to live with it.

One of mine was stuck and I got it lose thru the handhole but don't remember how.

Just to add, check the keys on the shafts. My dads ZA had a bad keyway on the cast iron
lever where the clutch lever rod connects to. When you pushed the lever forward the clutch
would catch a little and engage and then disengage a little as you couldnt balance out the forward motion so it would jerk
some.

To remedy jerking or grabbing, when servicing the clutch with the tractor split and clutch apart. ALWAYS replace the small coil springs around the plate. They collapse and loose tension, and do not provide enough resistance as the clutch lever is engaged, so as to allow the clutch to engage easily and smoothly.
