MM R governor

This is my first post on this forum. I'm trying to help a friend get the governor adjusted on an R. I took a quick look at it today and didn't see any place to adjust the linkage. It seemed to have a lot of movement at the throttle lever before the rod to the carb will move. Did not see a hard stop at the throttle lever either. The only restriction to the lever movement was the governor arm. Any suggestions, I have no experience with MMs.

There is usually a fair amount of play that way when moving the throttle. Just make sure that the linkage from the governor to the carb moves freely and doesnt bind. It should pretty much fall down after you lift it up. To adjust that part you may either have to bend the linkage rod slightly or loosen the 4 bolts on the governor and turn it to a point where it doesnt bind. The machine screw with nut on the side of the governor is the high idle stop. The low idle stop screw is on the throttle shaft of the carburetor. High idle is 1650RPM no load. I set mine at 1625.

it would have helped if you had told us how it was acting.

If you care to take it apart, check for end play on the flyweight shaft. also check for badly worn pins on the flyweights themselves. I feel certain that someone offers those pins, if you need them.

A lot of those have more than .030 end play on the shaft by now and work better if they have a shim washer installed between the gear and the housing. The original washer was phenolic(sp?) or some such but a steel washer will work as long as its understood that it may wear the housing or gear more quickly.
Also, if its been sitting for a long time, I have seen the sleeve around the spring freeze in the housing.

Thanks for the replies. I found a patent drawing of that style governor on line this morning. Older version but the same layout. After studying it I think it's just wore out or broken spring, something like that.
