G-955 head problems

I have a 955 with some cracked heads. Just curious what casting numbers were on other D451 heads, and what will swap with a 451. I believe the casting number is 10A3113? I dont have the heads near by to be shure. Did some 451 heads have cooling problems? mine have been to a machine shop a few times, they do good work, but the engine has always run on the hot side, so they only last 5-7 years and crack again. Any info would be aprieciated.
Thanks JD

See my post about the G900, its higher up on the forum.

All 451 heads had problems. I think the only 541 head numbers were 23791 an 31139 but I could be wrong. Getting 3 good 451 heads on a diesel engine at one time seems to be like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Make sure you have the ball bearing water pump on your machine, that will majorly help. I think the 955 came factor with them though.

It does have the better water pump, radiator is clean, 143 degree thermostats..... you are right
the head numbers are 10A31139. Been looking for a different set with no luck on finding them. Are
there better cooling diesel heads out there, that fit a 451? I wouldnt mind putting a set from
something else on.

You are in quite a bit of trouble. I have seen 504 diesel heads installed on these engines. They will lower your compression some though.

Your best bet, if they are somewhat repairable is to find a really good shop you trust to weld them up and buy you some more rounds around the field.

Well thanks any way. Do the 504 heads run any cooler, or is the cooling problem in the blocks? I do have a good reliable machine shop, he just knows his limits. Thanks

You say your heads are cracked, but do they pressure test good? I have 3 G900's, a G950, and a G955. I'm willing to bet if you were to take them apart, 3/4 of them are cracked between the valves. It's a matter of if the crack leaks or not. Heads are very hard to find. I've had a couple welded with good results. As to running hot, I haven't been able to run our 955 enough as it is getting a clutch, but with the oil coolers in front of the radiator, all that needs to be good and clean to cool. I would be willing to bet your radiator needs a good cooking. My 900 has the smoke screw opened quite a bit, and runs right where it should on temperature. That's with the old water pump.

My 955 has a 30 yr history of running hot you can clean or replace the radiator every day and it
still runs hot, and yes the cracks are leaks. If you put that 955 on a 6 in 50 ft auger temp will
be around 220, if you actually work it as in pull a 15 ft 750 deere drill it is in the 130's and
the water will be steaming out a little. If you put 5 bottoms of moldboard behind, lets just say
you stay to gardening. Now days it spends most of its time on an auger, tender, stalk chopper, or
other "yard jobs". Thanks for the reply
