I am curious about the live PTO setup for a U. I think I would like one for mine but I keep seeing people roll pinning them or bolting them together. It isn't all that costly to get them relined. My question is this. Are they really so problematic that they should be avoided at all costs or are people just being cheap because they don't use PTO much? Thanks.

That idea or design was used on many tractors. You have to remember many have sat for 50 years and people do not want to fool with them for a parade tractor. There was also an issue of slipping of big HP pullers.

I have a 1950 U that has the LPTO, this spring I wanted to plow with it. So I tripped the plow and it move about a foot and stopped, tractor was running but not moving. Come to fine out the LPTO clutches were soaked in oil and were slipping. There be someone better explaining it how the LPTO works. I do have a service bulletin that I bought that shows a field installation of the LPTO. I am in the process in replacing the seals on that side. The parts are hard to find. I'm trying to see if I can relined the clutches.

The ZB I bought years ago had one. It had been sitting a while and someone had cut the lever off. I worked on it and welded a lever on it so I could use it. I didnt do a lot of heavy pulling but I did cut some hay with it. I liked it. It was very smooth to stop and start. I cant imagine how they worked on the GVI's lol. I believe the ZBs were one disc, U-UBs were a two disc. Not sure what they used on the GTBs, GBs and the GVIs. Had a friend of my dads that had a UB with one. He said he was out plowing and each round he kept getting slower and slower but the engine was running the same speed. Happened to be the pto clutch slipping.

MM lpto setup was not a true live pto. All it really did was slip left axle. Had one on a U diesel and it was basically useless. I believe they were made for MM by M/W. True live pto has extra shaft running to flywheel/clutch. Have several parts ones.

I have heard the M/W - MM connection as well. Didnt they make something similar for IH? I remember seeing something in an old parts catalog.

If you had all parts what would be a fair price for the whole lpto setup? I'm not ready to do anything for a while but I'd like an idea. I use my old U a lot and I think disc brakes would do a lot better.

The LPTO is a live PTO. Not to be confused with an independent PTO.

With a LPTO when you disengage the engine clutch everything stops, transmission and pto.

With an independent PTO, the PTO runs independently of the transmission and does not stop if you disengage the engine clutch. It can be engaged and disengaged at will.

I've been around one on a ZB for the last 50 years and the only problem we had was the seal between the inner and outer shafts went bad once and soaked the linings. After that it would slip in a hard pull. We put a new seal and clutch disk in and so far its been good for probably the last 20 years. Dad still uses the tractor every year to plow up the garden.

Most people who tractor pull pin them together. Also I have heard of taking the spacers out and installing shorter bolts to just clamp the plates around the clutch disk.

I do remember it was somewhat of a chore to get the clutch springs back in place when we put the new disk in, they kinda balance on little nubs until both plates pull toether.

You may be right. And M&W did sell a similar unit for a limited model of tractors. But I think Ausco-Lambert built the MM. It is the same clutch that is used in the MOTRAC Crawler, one for each side.
