BF Avery model V

I have a B.F.Avery model V. Where will I find the seriel number. It has a plate riveted to the side of the engine block. It has some pressed in numbers, 2 5/5 x 3 (bore and stroke)? 006 006 (valve settings)? and ZXB3 and 1170269. This is all that can be read on the tag, any painted on identifying descriptions are gone. My Dad acquired this tractor in the early 1960's last time it ran was in the late 70's. Its been sitting inside, not stuck but seems to have very little compression. Any way time to make it work and shine again. Dad said it had a Hercules motor, is that correct? Would there be a manuel or service book for this tractor? Thanks for any assistance. gobble

Thank you John from Illinois. Is it a Hercules engine? The numbers on nomenclature plate, any idea on those? thanks so much gobble

Yes it is a Hercules ZXB engine. The long number is the engine serial number. There used to be an I & T manual for those in with some M-M models. More questions?

Tom I can't add much value here J. covered it. BUT a friend restored one and I can get in touch with him if need be as they rounded up parts. That engine is very small don't know but a Farmall cub had more power!!! I surmise setting that long would be prudent to go through it anyway. IT looks like a smaller version or ixb engine (oliver oc3) so very simple to work on. Don't know what production was but you see many farmall cubs Deere LA Massey pony but only a very few of the V or BF its a unique little tractor.

If you want to re-ring it measure the pistons first as I did a clinic probably 20 years ago and I was working for Dana at the time. This guy told me the Perfect Circle rings were no good because they did not fit. The reason was not all ZX engines used the same width rings, so you need to check what width rings you need. There is a man down the road that has (or had) about 10 of them plus spare parts. Let me know how I can contact you and I will put you in touch with him. J..

J. Again thank you. Yes this will be my first get into the motor and replace rings, ball hone? the cylinders, check the lower end rod and mains. So yes I will be looking for parts. The tractor is complete, I have the cultivator and the plow. e-mail is [email protected]

Yes it is a "cute" little tractor. Kinda hard to believe a much smaller engine today has more hp. But it is a 1948 and still repairable so maybe that tells a story, where will those smaller engines of today be in 67 years. Thanks for your help gobble

The tag you see is just for the engine. Its a ZXB and the 2-5/8 x 3 is bore and stroke. Like Ill John said, the serial number is on the right frame rail close to the air cleaner. You can decode the year from the serial number on the Tru-draft Registry website. (I hope its still up, its been years since I was on there.)

Somebody told me once that 2-5/8 bore was standard bore for the Farmall Cub engine. You would have to have someone check their catalog to see if rings would actually fit. Like someone said, for rings, all three dimensions, I.D. , 0.D., and width have to be correct for them to work.

P.S.: The only way an Avery A beats a Farmall Cub is it has a slightly higher top speed. Much more awkward in all other respects, including getting on and off.

I am restoring a 1947 BF Avery Model A. The serial number is stamped on the right hand rail close to the aft end. Mine has the IXB3 engine, so just a little larger bore & stroke but I'll be looking for parts too. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
