GVI MM Injection Pump??

In Nov 2012 I bought this 1959 model GVI MM diesel on a sale at Pomona,KS......It was advertised as having been overhauled 20 years earlier and never used....After getting it home we pulled it about 5 feet and it ran for about 5 seconds and was shut off because of the old fuel and oil..

It got shoved in the shed after getting new fuel, oil, and filters....Because of starter motor issues it was never started in the shed..I recently got the tractor out of the shed and got the starter motor issue resolved...The tractor will not start...We pulled it all over the yard with the injector lines loosened and can get just a little fuel at 3 injectors..Its never hit a lick..As you can see it has an electric fuel pump and is getting fuel to the pump and return..

Were these pumps known to stick if they sit for awhile?I'm guessing that I have internal damage? Its funny that it wouldn't stick sitting for 20 years but now might be after sitting for a little over 3 years.. Any ideas?

Take cap with two screws off. Use a screwdriver to see if gear will move slightly each way. Shaft on gear drives head rotation and is known to break. If you crank motor with wrench slightly gear has to move. Also make sure rod moves in hole by gear. This is your governor linkage and shutoff. Do you have fuel at third filter as this is pressured by transfer pump?

I just replaced a four cylinder version that did the exact same thing, the timing gear drives the helical shaft, it rotates and goes up and down to pump the fuel. These will sit and stick and when you turn the engine it will twist the shaft. Take the head off and if it is broke the spring and bottom half of the shaft will come off the head when you pull it off.

Don't feel bad about 7 years ago a local collector sold his collection. I was there Friday night and looked at the tractors. They had a UB diesel I fell in love with. They was using it to move wagons of parts around and it ran great. Come Saturday they went to sell the UB and it wouldn't start. Me knowing it ran the night before paid good money for it. Got it home and all of the timing gears had the teeth stripped off. Paid to much for parts but we fixed it anyway.

Yup, when the plunger sticks and breaks the hydraulic head is history. Last Massey-Harris PSB I needed three pumps to get enough good parts to make one good. Have not tried it yet but if there's room the taller military head might work if the correct tappet is used. Or you could really fuel it with a M100 pump from an IH, like I did on a Cockshutt 570. Lots of tinkering to make that fit though..

Thanks for all the input...I'll tear in to it in a couple of days and I'm sure the news won't be good....Hopefully its just a broken shaft..

If the pump is shot, a Roosa-Master and drive assembly from a later GVI or G705 will bolt in place of the PSB.

This afternoon I took the cap off with 2 screws.....Couldn't seem to get the gear to move with a screwdriver but didn't put wrench on front pulley to turn the motor over...Governor linkage and shutoff move OK...No fuel at the filter closest to the injection pump..Other two have fuel..

If only the shaft broke will that be a simple fix at a pump shop??

I spent the rest of the afternoon getting my 1929 Twin City 21-32 running...It had last ran in Nov 2014 and then the gas tank went to leaking...A friend fixed it so put it back on and it was great to hear it come back to life..I will show it and pull it at the Adrian,MO show in late June as they are featuring MM's this year..Would love to pull the GVI MM up there against the 720 JD's as they've been winning every year.

Besides the Roosa-Master pump and injector lines what else will I need??Does it take the front engine cover-gears-etc?? I prefer a Roosa-Master as they are simple and about the only thing that sticks is the metering valve..

I usally have enough parts here to make one fly again. I build a few each month for a couple regular customers. PSB parts can be swapped out on many different color tractors. Al Baker 231/757/0064

Does gear rotate? Fuel has to be fed to pump and pressurized by throughh final filter. Either your transfer pump is not working or electric pump. I have never used the electric pump on any. I pull off transfer pump and put on cordless drill with third filter bleed open. Wind drill up until fuel gushes out of bleed. You are not getting sufficient fuel to pump.

You need the drive assembly that goes with the Roosa pump (pic). The water pump needs to come off to get the Bosch drive gear out. After that the Roosa drive will go in from the back side, and drives off the cam gear. Only other things would be the lube lines for the drive, and the throttle rod is a bit different.

I had the wife hit the starter while I watched the little gear....It rotates just fine.....The electric fuel pump works good and pumps lots of fuel...It was on there when I bought the tractor...I think that the injection pump was gone thru when the engine was rebuilt...After that it sat unused for 20 years..Its ran for 5 seconds in the last 23 years..

I guess the transfer pump is under the plate I took off to see the gear..You take the transfer pump off the tractor to put the drill on it?? I've never messed with these pumps and neither has my brother whom is a mechanic..

The transfer pump is gear driven and held on with two quarter inch bolts it is under the shut off cover. Take that pump out and turn.it counter clockwise with your hand a bunch and crack the fuel line going into the head, you should see fuel pumping out. The pump I fixed the timing gear would turn but the shaft was broke above the timing gear you see turning.everything looked fine on it but it would not pump when I took the head off it was obvious. Sitting is hard on those things I have heard the clearance is so tight a piece of dirt you can't see with your eye will lock them up. Good luck

Transfer pump is held on with two bolts. it is where your two hoses go into. Tank should be half full. Bleed air outrank motor over and fuel should gush out of third filter. Diesel flows from second filter to electric pump in your case. Out of pump to inlet of transfer pump. Goes out of transfer pump back to third filter. Then out of third filter to top of pump. There has to be good flow entering head of pump,
