Trying to figure out if my generator is bad, when the tractor is running the amp meter shows no movement at all, but the other day I was checking something and I notice that when I turn the switch all the way to the right, the amp gauge shows about 15 while the tractor is off. I have a wiring diagram, and checked the wires and all were wired correctly or so I thought, but now not so sure. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks

If battery is fully charged, the amp meter should show just slightly to + side when running

Original switch all the way to right should be lights only. If lights are working ammeter could go to near minus 15 with engine not running.

Surest way to check charging is measure across battery posts with engine off, then running at about 3/4 throttle. Running voltage should increase at least 10%

avant 1735,
With the tractor running; ground the field post. That should make the generator give full rated output. Grounding an 'A' circuit generator bypasses the regulator and forces full generator output. If there is no output, drop me a line and I can email you a cookbook sheet to troubleshoot generator problems. I am assuming you have a UTU because you have the rotary ignition light combination switch.
Take care.

Charlie, thanks for the reply, I am waiting on a new carb. before I can get the tractor running again. I cannot understand why the amp meter would show a positive reading with the tractor not running, and the switch is turned all the way to the right,(it is a new switch), makes me think a wire is crossed (the wires are all new, done by someone else, but I checked them against a wiring diagram and all appears to be correct). I have a model U. When I get the new carb. on it, and it its running properly I will try your instructions. If I have a problem I will contact you. Thanks Joe

Is your system positive or negative ground? Amp meter should read negative with switch on and engine not running. If it reads positive, either the amp meter connections or the battery connections are reversed.

Tractor is a negative ground, I agree with all you have stated. I guess there is a wire crossed somewhere. I will have to go over the wiring diagram again. Thanks

The tractor was originally positive ground. Sounds like one of two possibilities. (1) Either the person who converted from positive to negative ground did not reverse the ammeter connections, or (2)the person who rewired assumed it was as original and configured ammeter for positive ground.

Just reverse ammeter connections and it should indicate correctly.

Also with negative ground the small negative (--) post on coil should go to side of distributor
