I am trying to adjust the lifters on my U, had to replace the head gasket. I guess I am not understanding the shop manual to clearly. It tells me the clearance of the intake and exhaust, but do I need to have the no. 1 piston in TDC? CAn someone walk me through the process? Thanks

Each cylinder needs to be at top dead center, compression stroke, to adjust the valves on that cylinder. There is a method to use where you jump around cylinder to cylinder, and can do it in less engine rotation, but, doing each hole on tdc is simplest. Turn engine over until intake valve closes, with spark plug out, you can stick a wire or welding rod onto cylinder and tell when piston comes up. Don't have to be perfect tdc, just close.

yes each cyl. to be adjusted must be on TDC on COMPRESSION stroke. you adjust each cyl. following the firing order. 1342. after setting #1 then set #3 and so on. have plugs out for ease of turning engine. you dont have to stick wires or straws into the cyl's. you watch the running mate for each cyl to be adjusted. for example... when bringing #1 cyl. on compression you watch the valves on #4 cyl. as you are turnng engine over slow, one valve will be closing and the other one opening at the same time. once you see this happen just rock the engine back and forth a bit so those two valves are about equal in travel. that tells you #1 cyl. is on the compression stroke at tdc. you just go through this procedure till you have all 4 cyl's adjusted. running mate for #3 cyl'is #2 cyl, so watch those valves to be on the rock, as you are now setting #3 cyl. valves. and so on for the other 2 cyl's.
