Maybe this is an old idea and you guys know about it. I was having trouble replacing the shift lever boot on a ZB. I could not get it in the casting groove. So I pulled it off and turned the boot inside out. I shoved it back on the lever down to where it should be and then rolled the boot back to the way it was . It was now on the casting and all I did was push it up a bit and it fell in the groove. That worked kind of slick I think, because there is little room to work with that under the instrument panel.

Yes that is how it is done. I was lucky to have my Grandpa show me that trick when I was real young.

Another thing that helps is to put it in hot water for a few minutes. That softens it up and also expands it a little, which makes it easier to work with. Also a little dish soap on the lever helps it to slide down into position.
