Is it easy to flood an LP engine? I'm new to LP. I am having a dickens of a time getting my Jet Star 3 (220 engine) started when I want it. Am I flooding it? I want this to be my "go to" tractor and it is not working out.

Brian,I have had a d-19 AC since 1978 and it has been agood tractor. the only real drawback has been starting in cold weather. I more recently acquired 2 MM's and the start better in the cold. First you need to always start on vapor not liquid. If just doing light to moderate work just stay on vapor. If you use liquid turn close the liquid valve before you shut down and let it burn up the fuel in the lines. It will start better next time.Generally you can not flood on vapor, but if you do just close valve open throttle and crank over. Hope this helps. Rick

We have had a U and UB Special propane on the farm since new. I do not know if this technique transfers to your Jet Star. Our tractors have Ensign carbs and vaporizers. Cold starts, as outlined in the operator's manual, instruct to start with full throttle and full choke. This is the procedure for cold starts, winter or summer. After a moment to warm, retard throttle and push choke back in. There is no intermediate choke or throttle position used. Starting on vapor helps as does electronic ignition and fresh plugs. Do not go to a "hot" plug. If your carburetor is like ours, there is a procedure to adjust the mixture. I do not think you can flood a propane engine.

You can flood but that will normally only happen if the regulator/vaporizer is passing fuel when it's not supposed to. When that happens there are other signs of trouble like, gurgling in the oil of the air cleaner and the leaking away of fuel when the valves are not shut off, and of course, the smell of fuel. My 4Star LP is my go-to tractor and never fails, yours SHOULD be the same way. Know that your ignition system is proper before you pick on the LP system because rarely is there anything wrong with that
