Piggy backed MM U

Hello to all at the MM site!

I cut my teeth driving a U. Rotary hoeing corn, beans, spraying, and hauling ear corn to the crib. Dad never put the seat on so I stood the whole time. Dad also had this U behind a JD G Piggy backed pulling 5-16s.

So for old time sake I bought a UB LP to run the farm generator, then found a U like I cut my teeth on, so that followed me home.

So for giggles and to take to the plow days I want to piggy back them.

My question is, does anyone have detailed pics and comments on the hitch and controls to setup the U as the rear tractor? I have ideas in my head, but would like input from others on what they have seen or done.

Thank You for any help. Dave

First pic is the UB.

Second is the U.

There is a tandem U at Killarney MB for Flywheel Days. It is in antique pull and does quite well. Maybe someone has contact name.

I have seen various tandem set ups, and they vary as to how they are done. On a U usually the rear tractor has the wheels off the front and the pedestal left on, and side rails are built along the tractor, extending out the front to rest on the forward tractor. Your dads hookup was simpler be cause both tractors had hand clutch. Yours is going to be more complicated with the U having a foot clutch.

Well put the U-B in front, you want to sit now, right part time, the throtle can be a truck hoist control with a handle on the U-B,The perch where the nose of the U, has to sit, should bee back a bit to counterbalnce the U-B and give you some room to get off and on! My 02 cents worth.

You'll have more trouble than that. A ub is a different rear end gear ratio than a utu.ub is lower geared to better handle a four bottom plow.

The guy who has the Minneapolis U piggyback at Killarney is Keith Marshall at Ninga. It was a good unit made up at the local blacksmith shop in Ninga for his father over 60 years ago. His phone number is listed under the Boisssevain Manitoba telephone exchange.

My Dad had a U and UB Special hitched in tandem in the late 50's
A 1950 U and 1955 UB Special. We still have these two tractors, separated now, seem to have the same gear ratios. Early U's may have been different.
