1948 ZTN - A few questions

Some months ago I posted an inquiry about the value of a 1948 ZTN. Yesterday, I brought it home as the owner really wanted it off his property. With some tinkering, it fired right up and runs very well. No smoke, good oil pressure, motor is quiet....everything seems to work well. Since this is my 1st MM, I have some questions.
1. What does the 'rockshaft' (for lack of a better word) under the seat do? When the pedal opposite is depressed, and the unit engaged, this rotates until the pedal is released. Was this an early form of a lift?
2. Am I missing a clamp on the left wheel? The hub appears different than the right wheel.
3. The shifter has a huge amount of slop - front to back. Is this adjustable at all? Was there a shift boot on this model?
4. What's the proper color for the year? Prairie Gold?
5. I am missing the side panels, grill, and need a throttle lever. Any suggestions on where I can get these parts would be appreciated. I have a shop manual on the way.
Thanks in advance - Mike

I should have all the parts you need. Email me and I will send you some pictures. The hub pictured looks normal. Its just on backwards so the wheel could be in further. Thanks.

What you are calling a rock shaft, (what I call it) is a power lift. It was used to raise and lower the cultivators. There was a
arm that went from the piece on the right side, up to a shaft that run crosswise, that was in front of the seat spring. The lever
on the left side engaged or disengaged the pto, which had to be engaged for the lift to work, and of course you step on the pedal
to raise or lower. Maybe it was used for other things, but the cultivators was all we used it for.

I think there was some kind of a shifter boot on them but not in the normal sense that most have.

Mr.Precision

Just to let you know that your ZTN is the Forth to the last ZTN built before switch they to the ZAN series tractors

Mike glad to see you got your tractor, I also have a 1948 ZTN, you said you needed a throttle lever, I have the handle only, if that's what you need you can have it. Mike

There was a canvas 'boot' that went over the shifter and onto the housing where the shifter slides in and out. It was a little longer , so it would stay in place . It was held in place with two pieces of bailing wire, really. Look in a parts book.
A safety note, It mite be a good idea to remove that arm on the rite side of the power lift. Mite save some broken bones if it rotated and got your ankle, foot or leg in it. That has happened! There is a shield that goes over it , but it is not easy to find one. clint

Thanks to all for the great replies and suggestions.
Here are a few more pictures. This thing is a beast. I ordered a muffler as it currently has a straight 3" pipe and is MUCH too loud for my tastes. I am amazed how well it runs after cleaning the carb, changing the plugs and lubing everything. Still need to change the differential fluid, and plan on using GL5 85-140W which I have used in my other vintage tractors. And I need to order an oil filter from Welters.
One question unanswered: the front to back distance between each gear on the shift lever is about a foot. Is there supposed to be that much travel, and if not is there a way to shorten the travel on the lever?
