u-302 torque problem

I have a '66 u302 that jumps out of low
gear. It does not slip and make the
familiar whining sound it just stops. If
you clutch it and idle down it gets back
into gear. I have an I and t book and am
ready to fix it myself, just looking for
any tips you may offer. Thanks

I bbelieve you are saying low range is out on the ampli-torc. You said it does not slip? If it stops when the torc is pulled back the sprag for low range is wore out and slipping. When the clutch is pushed in that usually gives the rollers in the sprag a chance to lock up like they are supposed to. The low side of the torc will not grind or make noises when it slips. The torc is pretty straight forward. Check the clutch, grease hose, throwout bearing, put in a new rear main seal, and put the transmission input shaft seal in. Good luck.

Just FYI, my 900 will do the same thing, even hot. If you're plowing and wait until you have almost no forward momentum left before you torque, you may stop. Then clutch and in a moment you'll here a slight clunk and then you're good to go. So I appreciate the thick oil thing but it can also happen hot.
