Water pump 4 star

hey, I have a 4 star. My water pump went out so I purchased a new one. I am having trouble removing the fan off the water pump shaft, in order to be able to loosen water pump bolts to remove it. Any idea's? I have sprayed penetrating oil, used heat, and a crow bar to try to pry fan off of the water pump shaft. Is there a better way to so this? Thanks, Ryan

Sir,
It takes a press to remove the #7197 fan hub. Trying to use a pry bar will destroy the #11A7253 fan pulley.Never use the pulley as a push point for anything. Most damage to 206/220 water pumps comes from someone trying to disassemble them with hand tools and pry bars. That hub must be pressed off with a gear puller or bench press. When doing assembly; you must press the hub on the bearing shaft without using the pump body as a push point. The bearing would be ruined by pressing sideways on it.

Pushing on the impeller will screw up the 0.005" clearance the impeller needs. Never sand on the pump bearing shaft as the friction is needed to maintain the 2.75" spacing from the pulley base to the pump housing flat. Remember that oil and penetrating lube will kill a water pump seal faster than a hammer on glass.

Take care.

Thanks Charlie, I was thinking I could get the fan hub off so I didn't have to pull radiator. Is that the only way to get it off?

Thanks, how would you go about pulling the water pump and fan hub out? I suppose I have to pull the radiator and such. Thanks

You should NOT have to take the radiator off. In your first post you said you couldn't get the fan off, in your next one you said fan hub. Which is it? By taking out the 4 small cap screws the fan and pulley will come off the hub. then you have easy access to remove pump from the engine, and plenty of room.

I doubt you can get a new one from Agco but I have never checked to verify that. I have a couple used ones if you are interested.
