serial number

I just purchased a model U, I can find a serial # plate on the engine (283), but I cannot find one that says model U anywhere. Where is it supposed to be. I also want to put electronic ignition on it, I have looked at a few sites and cannot find one for the model U. Does anyone know where I can find one. I looked at CBS performance automotive and Hot Spark Electronic Ignition Conversion Kits. Thanks

Pertronix makes an electronic ignition for the U. The tractor serial # should be on the right side of the transdown in front of the brake. We can tell the year of the motor using that serial # and what it was origionally in.
