well I put the motor together and started it-- some gurgling going on in the radiator -- cracked jug?? had them both cracked checked and
they checked ok --now what ??

If it has a thermostat, be sure there is a small (3/16 to 1/8) weep hole in the outer edge of the thermostat. The thermostat is mounted up at the top of radiator away from the block heat source. Weep hole allows warm water to rise through top radiator hose and activate the thermostat thus relieving back pressure in the cooling system.

the radiator seems to overfill right after you start it -- plugged radiator?? then it seems to gurgle some -- cracked head?the thermostat is open -- the rad is about a half flow at best but that should cool a non working engine -- any more thoughts ??

Did you check the water pump baffle? If it rusted away it will cause overheating and water flow issues.

If you just heard a little gurgle and have no other symptoms fill it let it warm up and see what happens. I if I did that I would put a radiator pressure tester on it before I started it. That way if I had a head gasket problem or somthing similar the radiator pressure would rise and I could see it there before it hurt somthing.

the water pump is good and the plate inside it is perfect -- I even tightened the head first then the jugs --the flow in the radiator wont keep up with a garden hose -- so we took it off and we will deal with that first -- ever seen one of those heads crack?thanks for all your thoughts so far !Roy

Had continual trouble with the cooling system on my 47 ztu. Everything checked out, water jackets clean, rad redone, good water pump- gurgle gurgle boil splash sploosh! I replaced the radiator top thermostat with one from a 9n. It goes midway up the return hose, is the correct diameter and temperature rating. Problem solved, the coolest running Z in the district. Just a thought.
