I have an RT that I am looking for information on, when did the battery box go from the back platform to under the gas tank? I have remnants of the battery box on the rear platform, from several of the Old MM Jensen Photos some of the early R's did not have starters or batteries.

Thanks!

The battery went under the gas tank at the same time they switched to the rounded gas tank. Serial # 404801 - mid 1940. I have a 1940 RTS with the box on the platform. I got a A-C WC battery box from Steiner's, as it is very close to the original. It has a few extra holes which I may fill before painting.

Battery box shows up as RT850. Z and U used different battery boxes. All are listed as accessories in parts books.

When did electric become standard on the RT?

I also have a Marvel Schebler TSX 30 on this tractor, I am curious about how the choke cable was set up, I know in the Marvel-Schebler booklet it says you need to change the choke to a 26-638 assembly. All the wires and cables were wound up in a ball under the gas tank when I bought the tractor.

So I really do not know how the electrical wires go.

The choke cable mounts through the third small hole from the left on the instrument panel, then goes through the larger hole at the bottom of the rear gas tank support to the carb. I put mine in the second hole from the left because I thought the cable flowed and looked better. Get yourself a copy of Instruction book # R1006B. This is the correct book for the early R tractors. It is a smaller book with a red cover. It has good illustrations and information on the wiring, etc. You can usually find this book for sale on ebay.

I'm not sure what year electrics became standard. It would definitely have been after WWII. Probably 1946 or 1947 when the distributors came out. That looks like a pretty decent and complete old tractor. Have fun!

The tractor was pretty complete just missing a few small items but I have located them now.

One think i have to attest to the mag is still nice and strong. I was turning over the engine and when the impulse snapped, it arced a spark about 3/8 of an inch from one of the cracked wires.

Fairbanks made a very good mag. I have been told by a few that they are fire breathing dragons on these old tractors.

The plan is to see if I can get the old girl to run this weekend.

I did not get the old girl running, I ran into another problem, actually it surprised me when I removed the heads to work on a stuck valve, well I found a crack in one of the jugs. Bummed.

So it was open heart surgery for the old girl that night.

Thanks to many on this forum, there are many eyes on the look out for parts!
