the brakes on my ZA are all rebuilt and in good shape but they are very harsh when you step on them like they lock up bad what did I do wrong it will lock the wheel up when you just tap them?

If you put new linings on and they aren't oil soaked it could be that the shoes aren't centered on the backing plate. There is a small eccentric wheel or washer that accomplishes that. It has a lock nut and a small bolt to turn for adjusting. I believe it is explained in the operators manual. I can see if I can find the info on it if you don't have a manual.

One other thing that sometimes helps. Put the strongest return spring on the rear shoe and put it on the anchor pin last. this way, the front shoe touches the drum first. If the rear shoe hits first, it slams the front shoe into the drum and makes it much easier to lock up. (This only helps when moving forward.)

Silly question, but did you put the springs in correctly? They were different front to rear in the ZTU & I think they are the same for the ZB.

Sir,
Look in your owner's manual and follow the four step procedure to adjust the three drum brake points, in the stated order. Grabbing brakes means the shoes are being pulled in when they contact the drum.

When I was young; I adjusted the brakes on our UTU without reading the book. One taste of the steering wheel taught me to read the book.

Happy wrenching.
