I'm interested in rebuilding the engine on my 50 ZAU and I am wondering roughly what I all would need and a projected price range also and who makes a good service manual
I want your high and low end price ranges

Right now the tractor starts and run has weak compression on the number one cylinder uses excessive oil on tough jobs and has a lot of piston slap under load
Thank you for looking

All depends how far you want to go into the engine. Measure the crank, piston skirt, valve guides, you could spend $1500 easy.
And that is if you do the over haul yourself.

It all depends on engine wear. A rebuild kit seems to be about $800. If none of the major parts are worn out your looking at about $1000. If they are you can spend a lot. If the crank needs turned or if it needs bored or sleeved.

Guys are right in their estimates how much it could cost. I had valve work done-that was nearly $500. I also put in new rings, water pump need to be repaired and a gasket set. In no time I had over 750 in it and I did nothing to the bottom of the engine. ZAUs are fairly cheap, you could find one with a good engine for under 1000.

I always felt you are ahead to rebuild. I've watched my dad wear stuff out and get "new" never really fix anything serious. Over time hes spent three times as much buying replacements as he would if he just fixed the o rigional right the first time.

There are a few questions to ask yourself , 1 will you
keep the tractor and wear it out ,2 do you have 2k to
spend on it if needed ,3 is this a collector tractor that
is going to sit and not run enough to keep the moisture
out of the oil. If you answer yes, yes,no then give a
complete overhaul.
