u shift pattern

I am just curious on this but I have a u and I just aquired a ub. I noticed the shift patterns are different. Is this normal? I know a u had two shift patterns depending on year. Mine is a1950 but I know the trans / rear end has been replaced. I know where the o rigional is at and have verified the serial number off of it. The serial number tag on the one in my tractor is to far gone to read. Is the rear end in my u older than the tractor?

Some early Us had a shift pattern seen below. I believe these tractors also had the high speed road gear.

Most likely your transmission is older. My '49 UTS has the late style pattern. I bet the pads on the transmission sides are different too. I bet yours has webs cast between the bolt pads and the webs were missing on the later cases.

Yes, I have a 38 and a 41 both have the old pattern with the high speed road gear and the creepy reverse. I believe that these are the same ones used in the UDLX but without the second disconnect shift lever used on that model. They are quite scary to drive in 5th. I wonder how many accidents were the result of that fast road gear back in it's day? Even on todays good roads I wouldn't want to open it up much.

sounds like the U has a mid 1946 or earlier shift pattern. Mid 46 is when the transmission gears were changed and I believe the shift pattern changed with it. You also should have a UT 100 casting number on the housing. The UT 100 housing was used on tractors after 46; but; they had the later shift pattern.
