Is there an easy way to tell the difference in a ub anda ub special if the hood is missing? Looking at one not sure which it is. It does have power steering that does not look like a charr-lynn

A UB Special has a flat faced grill. Has the cast radiator top housing with MM cast in it also. Steering sector is also squared off on the Special.

The one I'm looking at is missing the radiator as well.ill have to look at the sector. It was a narrow front. Has a Schwartz on it now.

The tractors are basically the same. A special would have a flat grill and a cast top radiator tank along with the power steering. It would also be easier to put a Swartz front end under a special. The front end is a whole unit on the older UB.

If it was a narrow front and is a regular UB it will have the front pedestal on it yet. The UB Specials had the first interchangeable front ends on that series. The narrow front would more than likely be removed if a wide front was put on. The Schwartz wide fronts used a "cap" on the end of the splines on the narrow fronts and angled up and back towards the engine to where they connected the tie rods to.

A gasoline UB has a canister oil filter, whereas a Special has the oil filter in the in the oil pan.
