Here's some pics of the G900 diesel that I'm considering buying. Serial# 1236 shows it to be late 1968. Owner finally got it started after putting some better batteries on it. Hadn't been started in about 3 years. I drove it back to our farm, about 2 miles on the road in 5th high. Drove good, felt a little squirrelly handling at first, may have been because of the tires, seemed to get better. One of the rear tires has a lot of checking, not great sidewall, but it will work. Left rear tire is set all the way in, right one is about ½ way out. How tough will it be to move out the left tire when it’s loaded with fluid?
Ampli-torq works. Tach not working. After running down the road and warmed up good, oil pressure runs around 60psi at high speed, around 40 at low idle. I let it idle for a few minutes before shutting down. Tried starting again, and it fired up no problem.
I engaged PTO, then disengaged. I then saw that the shafts were still turning at idle. Put my boot against the bottom shaft and it didn't stop turning. Is this an issue with the PTO brake? But when the engine is off, I can't turn the shafts by hand. What is normal for these? I'm going to try hooking up to a baler to see if it still turns when disengaged.
What type of hydraulic pump does it look like it has, open or closed center? Anything I should check as far as operation of the 3pt. and the remotes? Looks like it has a remanufactured water pump. I don’t see any obvious oil leaks. Rear head has some oil buildup on it, maybe valve cover gasket leaking?
I will try starting it today to see how it starts cold, and if it will start without ether. Owner said a mechanic that knows M-M well had looked at it a few years ago, and thought that the injectors might need to be cleaned to make it start better.
I like that it is pretty much an exact power match to our 1100 Massey, so I'd have another tractor that can run the round baler, 499 haybine, etc. I also like how simple everything looks to work on. I have a few days to check it over at my shop before I decide. So does $4000 sound reasonable?
