more info questions on G900 - have pics now

Here's some pics of the G900 diesel that I'm considering buying. Serial# 1236 shows it to be late 1968. Owner finally got it started after putting some better batteries on it. Hadn't been started in about 3 years. I drove it back to our farm, about 2 miles on the road in 5th high. Drove good, felt a little squirrelly handling at first, may have been because of the tires, seemed to get better. One of the rear tires has a lot of checking, not great sidewall, but it will work. Left rear tire is set all the way in, right one is about ½ way out. How tough will it be to move out the left tire when it’s loaded with fluid?

Ampli-torq works. Tach not working. After running down the road and warmed up good, oil pressure runs around 60psi at high speed, around 40 at low idle. I let it idle for a few minutes before shutting down. Tried starting again, and it fired up no problem.

I engaged PTO, then disengaged. I then saw that the shafts were still turning at idle. Put my boot against the bottom shaft and it didn't stop turning. Is this an issue with the PTO brake? But when the engine is off, I can't turn the shafts by hand. What is normal for these? I'm going to try hooking up to a baler to see if it still turns when disengaged.

What type of hydraulic pump does it look like it has, open or closed center? Anything I should check as far as operation of the 3pt. and the remotes? Looks like it has a remanufactured water pump. I don’t see any obvious oil leaks. Rear head has some oil buildup on it, maybe valve cover gasket leaking?

I will try starting it today to see how it starts cold, and if it will start without ether. Owner said a mechanic that knows M-M well had looked at it a few years ago, and thought that the injectors might need to be cleaned to make it start better.

I like that it is pretty much an exact power match to our 1100 Massey, so I'd have another tractor that can run the round baler, 499 haybine, etc. I also like how simple everything looks to work on. I have a few days to check it over at my shop before I decide. So does $4000 sound reasonable?

Looks nice. From what you described, I would not be afraid of it at $4,000. This one has closed-center hydraulics. You can tell by the large Vickers pump below the injection pump. This gives you about twice the hydraulic power over the older models. The White tractors were still using this hyd. pump in the 1980's. Moline PTO's were famous for rolling when dis-engaged, it's just a result of the design, a manual clutch running in heavy gear oil...nothing to worry about. Good luck!

I use two G-900's for haying. My 1969 is set up just like the one you have in the pictures. I pull my NH 499 Haybine with it and couldn't ask for a better combination other than ground speed options. I usually cut in first with the amplitorque in direct. It has 18.4 x 38's. I bale with a 1968 G-900 with the E type hydraulics and that works fine for my 849 NH baler. I used to bale with my M-670 and it did ok but it is nice to have the extra hp with hills and ditches. Paid $3,000 for the 1969 about 10 years ago so $4,000 probably isn't out of line. I have a MinnToba cab on the baling tractor and it is miserable.

Thanks for the info, that's good to know that they run good with similar equipment to what I have. I run a 499 mower and a NH 650 round baler with our 1100 Massey now.

I agree. I would grab it. Looks pretty good for what you describe. If I remember correctly, the G900s have a pto brake like the M670 Supers. I think the later M670 Supers were supposed to have an external plug on them (right side behind the hydraulic levers) to adjust the band for the brake so your G900 might have that. I will have to take a look in the manual. Being there is a cab on it might be a little more challenging. I cant remember where the crankcase breather is on those, might be the rear head as why there is more oil there. Where in Minnesota are you located? Im in the SW part.

I'm in central MN, by Buffalo.

Tractor fired up immediately when I started it today. I'm liking it a lot. Got a nice sound to it. Now to work a deal on the White 508 plow to go with it.

I looked in the parts book. The G900s don't have an external plug for adjusting the pto brake. Looks like that was just used on some of the early M670s. I think you will like it more and more. Just as long as you always keep an eye on the coolant and let them idle before shutting them off you should have a good tractor there. I like it myself... :)

Looks like a good one, it is not beat up. The problems you described are normal and you should be able to take care of them yourself. At $4000 I would be very happy with it, and you already have it home! Enjoy!

There is a clean '67 G900-D on a lot in Anson, Texas (Watts Tractor) with $6950 on the tag. It has the 8 bolt front axle with new 18.4-34 Goodyears on the rear and new 7.50-16 automotive tires on the front. It is running one AGM battery also.

Thanks Alan - We lost our computer at home to malware and only have a few pics on the work one but found a couple people might enjoy.
