Help - GTB Axle Housing Removal

We are currently restoring a 1952 GTB and wish to separate the axle housings from the transmission in order to replace the gaskets found in between the two. We have followed the IT Manual and attempted the remove the nut holding the bull gear onto the axle, thereby allowing us to pull the axle and axle housing away from the transmission together. Without much room to work inside the transmission we have been unsuccessful. Has anyone had any luck "jacking" the axle housing away from the transmission and off of the axle using the large 1" threaded holes located on the flanged portion of the axle housing?

We are just looking for some alternatives?
Thanks.

I did that on a U once. You gotta get that big nut off the axle, then remove the gear from the splines.

I am pretty sure any other way and you will bust something that will be hard to replace.

I got my nut off using a fairly long cold chisel and a big hammer on the corners of the nut. I have heard of people making a wrench to turn the nut.

Just to add, it might be a good idea to use a small amount of sealer on the gaskets when you install them. I have found that a lot of the older surfaces aren't machined real close and a lot of the gaskets now days aren't as thick as they used to be.

Thank you for the advice. The biggest issue is that the nut is tight and we have very little room to get a wrench on it. We will be at it again today and will figure something out.

Get your wrench fixed on the nut, and put a 24" pipe wrench or larger on the outer axes, with a 6-10' pipe on the handle.
